What is a Virus? What is Malware?
We all know what sort of damage a virus can cause, but what really is a virus?
Well, a virus is a malicious piece of computer code that is designed to, in some way, cause unauthorized actions on your PC. Depending on the goals of the attacker, a virus could do anything from slowing down your PC, to making it usable by corrupting important operating system files, or even as much as stealing your personal information (online banking username and password, credit card numbers).
Now that we know what a virus is, what is Malware?
Malware is similar to a virus. A virus will generally run in the background to cause a nuisance, Malware generally takes the form of an annoying piece of software that has installed itself on your computer. Common forms of Malware will try and sell you something, for example will bring a pop-up window that says your computer is infected, and wants you to give credit card details to remove the warning. Other forms of Malware can be designed just to purely annoy the user of the infected computer. Malware can be a lot harder to remove then a virus, as it may potentially install itself as a program, that will re-install itself if it is removed.
