HugoNet VoIP Setup Configurations

There are quite a number of different ways in which you are able to set up your VoIP. These different methods take into account different types of hardware that you might already have, and also how you want to integrate your new VoIP connection with you current telephony system. Please see the below methods for a great range of possible setup options.

Method 1: Standard One Port ADSL Modem + Standard ATA + Switch

This would be the most basic, entry level configuration that is offered. In this scenario, you would be using a standard 1 port Ethernet modem to access your ADSL internet. Due to the fact that you would most likely want your computer and your ATA to be connected to the internet at the same time, you will require a network device called a switch.

Using this method you will be provided with all the cables necessary. Simply connect your modem to the switch, the switch to the WAN port of your ATA, and the switch to your PC. Once all the devices have been turned on, you will have internet connectivity via your computer, and your ATA will be able to share the internet connection to make and receive VoIP calls.

This configuration would give you a number of available ports of the switch. You may connect more computers to the switch, and they would also have internet connectivity. Please note that to do this, you may require extra Ethernet cables, which are available at most computer stores.

Method 2: 4 Port Wireless ADSL + Standard ATA

This would be a slightly more 'featured' setup then the above. This configuration allows you to share your internet connection between multiple computer, and the ATA. As your modem will (most likely) have a 4 port switch built into the back of it, you are not required to purchase a switch (unless you need the extra ports). As you are using a wireless modem, you also have the freedom of being able to use a laptop or desktop with a wireless card it in to access the internet.

Method 3: VoIP Modem Router

Method 3 is the HugoNet preferred method of setting up your VoIP connection. This involves using one of our (or your own) VoIP broadband modem/router. The unit that we offer includes the ADSL Modem, 4 port switch, wireless access point, and a VoIP ATA all included on the one unit. This is a one stop shop for all that you would most likely need in your home network setup. If you have all of the correct cables plugged in, this unit will allow you to have one set of phones that will ring out using the VoIP line, and be able to receive calls on either the VoIP incoming, or your normal telephone line. This unit also features "fail-over", which is a technology that means if your VoIP connection is unavailable, or if you lose power, then your phones will still have access to your normal PSTN phone line, with no mucking around with cables necessary.

All of your equipment effectively plugs into this one unit. This allows for significantly less clutter, and a far easier install.
Please note that to have this configured and integrated with your existing telephones, you may require a technician to re-run some cables to this device.

Method 4: SIP Phone

Using a SIP phone is one of the simplest ways of getting your VoIP running. A SIP phone is a device that typically plus into your Ethernet network, and is configured to talk to our server at sip.hugonet.com.au. We currently offer three types of SIP phones: Standard, Advanced (with color screen), and a WiFi mobile-syle unit. If you have your own SIP phone, login details will be provided to you upon signup.

A SIP phone is any device which has an inbuilt SIP client. There is a large range of SIP phones on the market, all of which should be able to integrate with our network.

Method 5: "Soft" Phone Client

A "soft" phone client is a piece of software that runs on your computer. This software, coupled with a headset with a microphone that connects to your computer, allows you to make and receive calls while you are at your pc. HugoNet recommends its customers to use a freeware program called X-Lite. This software is available for free download here.

Please note that this product is offered as freeware, and as thus no warranty is offered. HugoNet will assist you in installing and configuring the software. Support outside of these areas must be referred to the software developers.
