What is Hosting?

Hosting - or Web Hosting - is the terminology used referring to getting a web site on the internet. To get a website on the internet, first you need content. You can create this yourself, or hire a 3rd party to design your web site. Once that is done then you need a server on the internet to host that web site, so that others can view it. This is where HugoNet steps in. With a fast connection to the internet backbone, and backup and UPS protection, you cannot go wrong.
HugoNet offers a variety of web hosting solutions to suit everyone from the individual, the small business, and left through to large businesses.

What content can I host?

On your HugoNet hosting account, you can host anything you like, as long as it is legal, and falls within the realms of our terms and conditions, and the acceptable use policy.

What is a Domain Name?

A domain name is your easy to remember address on the internet. Address such as www.google.com.au are easy for us humans to understand and remember, but not so for computers. They need everything converted into IP addresses - the logical addressing of the internet (think of it like street addressing).

What is disk space and bandwidth?

These are two of the most important terms with regard to web hosting:
Disk Space - This is most easily defined as the total size of all the files that make up your web page. This can vary greatly between a standard site with HTML and a few pictures, and an animated webpage with lots of picture as well as items like flash. You would probably have a good idea of about how much disk space your web site will take up, which will help you making your decision as to which hosting package will suit you the best.

Bandwidth - Probably the best way to describe bandwidth in the terms of hosting as how much data is transferred from your web site to the people that visit it. Every time someone loads a page, they are downloading content from your web page, which in turn counts towards your bandwidth.

How do I track how many hits my web site has?

HugoNet has invested a lot of time and money into creating the best web stats analyzer possible. Currently, HugoNet uses LiveStats.XSP(R) . This is an incredibly powerful tool which reads the detailed logs from the web server, and generates easy to read graphs and tables. Every single piece of information that you could ever think of is catered for in this magnificent program.

What are PHP, ASP, and Perl etc?

These are all different types of "server-side" technologies that your web site can use. These protocols allow you to create all sorts of magical content, without requiring a plug-in (like flash player) for your end user, making browsing your web site a far more enjoyable expertise.
The use of this technology is recommended for those who have knowledge in the area, as they are very complex and often require a certification in the given language to extract the most from the technology.

What is MYSQL, MS SQL etc?

SQL is a very common database technology. SQL allows for huge amounts of data to be stored, and is very efficient in retrieving data from the database. SQL can be used an a huge variety of ways to create dynamic content, and many other creative items for your website.

Will I be forced to have ads on my web page?

No - not with HugoNet. HugoNet does not require any of its clients to display any advertising at all. If you wish to have your own advertising on your web site, you are free to do so.

I am using too much bandwidth, how can I use less?

There are a number of techniques that can be used to reduce the amount of bandwidth. In some cases, it is possible to streamline the html code that your web pages use. However, in most cases, the best way to reduce bandwidth is via optimizing graphics. You can quite often reduce the number of colors, or increase the compression in your graphics. This will reduce the file size, reducing bandwidth, and will make your pages load much faster for your viewers.

What is the difference between UNIX and Windows hosting?

The main difference between UNIX and Windows hosting systems is the server side technologies that can be run. On a Windows system, for example, you may be able to run ASP or ASP.NET. However, as these are Microsoft technologies, they are not available on a UNIX system. Likewise, there are a number of technologies that are available only on UNIX systems.

How do I upload/change my website content?

Uploading content to your web site is a breeze. If you have selected your website to be hosted on a HugoNet server running windows, then you can use front page extensions. The best way to upload and change the content on your web site is via FTP. Once your HugoNet hosting account has been created, you will be notified of how to login to the FTP server.
