HugoNet VoIP (Voice over IP)

What is VoIP?

VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) quite literally means sending voice data (conversations) over the internet. The significance of this is that it is possible to reduce your call costs significantly. HugoVoIP utilities a well proven data network to give you quality phone services at a fraction the price of traditional fixed line call costs.

How does HugoVoIP work?

HugoVoIP works by sending your telephone conversation over the internet, rather then the traditional fixed line PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network). By sending the voice data over the internet, huge savings are able to be had due to the high costs of the PSTN. HugoVoIP uses a high quality private data network to ensure the quality and security of your voice conversations.

To be able to use HugoVoIP, you will need one of the following pieces of hardware/software:

ATA (Analogue Terminal Adapter)
An ATA device is a simple device that you plug into your home network. The device allows you to connect a normal analogue telephone to it, and make calls using your HugoVoIP account. This is the most simple and easiest way to start saving money with HugoVoIP.

For more information, please view our hardware page and also our setup page.

VoIP ADSL Modem/Router
The all-in-one Broadband ADSL Modem/Router/VoIP ATA/Wireless Access Point is the recommended way for HugoNet broadband customer to start with VoIP. This unit combines everything you need for your home network, and includes a built in ATA. This device also features fail over. This means that, if configured correctly (an easy job), that even if the power goes out, you will still be able to make calls over your existing fixed line service, with no fiddling around with cables.

For more information, please view our hardware page and also our setup page.

SoftPhone-Client
A SoftPhone Client is a piece of software that you can install on your computer. With the use of a headset with a microphone that plugs into your computer, you can make calls with your HugoVoIP account. All that is required is a broadband connection, and the SoftPhone Client itself. HugoNet recommends a package called X-Lite. You can download a free copy from here.

SIP Compatible Phone
A SIP compatible phone is commonly known as an IP phone. These phones generally plug directly into your Ethernet network, and communicate directly back to our servers. Using a SIP phone negates the need to an ATA device, as the phone has everything you need built into it. We currently offer three different types of SIP Phones: Standard (with LCD display), Advanced (with color LCD display), and also a wireless mobile-phone style phone. Please see our hardware page for pricing and more information.

All of these devices convert your voice into 'data packets' which are then sent over our network. If you are calling another HugoVoIP subscriber, you are able to call them for free, untimed, any day of the week, any time. If you are calling an external phone number (for instance, a traditional PSTN phone line), then you call goes through our network, to our closest Point of Presence to the person you are calling. From there, your telephone call goes over the traditional PSTN fixed line to the person you are calling. Because the distance that the call travels over the PSTN is very small (compared to if you made the call from your own fixed line), Call costs are greatly reduced. This is how we are able to provide you with a very high quality service, at a fraction of the price.

What do I need for VoIP to work?
As mentioned above, all you need for VoIP to work is a high speed broadband connection, plus either an ATA, an all-in-one VoIP router, or a soft phone client.

HugoNet recommends that its customer be on at least a 1500k broadband connection for VoIP to work properly. Please note that VoIP calls will count towards your data limits on your internet connection, and thus we recommend at least the 1500k Value $62.95 per month plan or above.

How much will VoIP cost?
HugoVoIP is a highly cost effect means of making telephone calls. You can even make $FREE! calls to other HugoVoIP subscribers. For more great HugoVoIP prices and special offers, please click here.

Will I still need my land line if I get VoIP?
Generally speaking, yes you will still require your land line for HugoNet Voice to work. The reason for this is that most of our customers will be using an ADSL Broadband internet connection for their VoIP. Therefore, you must have a full service land line in order to receive broadband, and thus the internet connection that makes VoIP work. You may be able to save costs in this area though. You may want to lower your land line plan to the very minimum, and use your VoIP phone to make all of your calls. This way, all of your outgoing calls are made using VoIP, which is generally a lot cheaper than the land line.

Please note that the HugoVoIP service is not sold as a replacement for your existing fixed line service. Although you are able to make emergency calls through the HugoVoIP service, we recommend that you use your existing telephone line in the case of an emergency.
